Essential March Maintenance Tasks

Undercarriage & Exterior Deep Clean: Thoroughly wash the underbody and wheel wells to remove road salt and grime that can cause rust and corrosion. Applying a fresh coat of wax protects the paint from spring rain and UV exposure.

October is National Fall Car Care Month, making it the perfect time to prepare your vehicle for the cooler, wetter weather ahead. Performing a thorough inspection now can help prevent breakdowns and costly repairs during the harsh winter months.

Under the hood.

Test your battery. Summer heat wears down batteries, so have your battery and charging system professionally tested to ensure it will reliably start in cold temperatures. If your battery is more than three years old, consider replacing it.
Check fluids. Cold weather can stress your engine, so check all fluid levels, including engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.
Inspect your coolant/antifreeze. Check the level and concentration of your coolant, and consider a flush and refill if it's old or dirty. This prevents the system from freezing.
Change oil and filters. A fresh oil and filter change ensures your engine is properly lubricated and runs efficiently. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to switch to a lower-viscosity "winter weight" oil.
Inspect belts and hoses. Look for cracks, leaks, or fraying on the accessory drive belts and cooling system hoses. Cold weather can make these components more brittle.

Tires and brakes

What is tire dry rot

Does your tires shows signs of cracking or splitting in the sidewall

If you spot dry rot, it’s time to replace the tire.

What is tire dry rot? Dry rot is when a tire shows signs of cracking or splitting in the sidewall, and it’s caused by:

Excessive exposure to UV rays from sunlight.
Harsh chemicals especially petroleum based products.
Storing tire in a severe temperature environment.
Lack of use or prolonged storage.
Low tire inflation pressure.

With advanced cases of dry rot, you could see:

Cracking in the tread pattern or upper sidewall of the tire.
Cracking in the lower sidewall or bead area, just above where the tire is mounted to the wheel.
A hard and more brittle surface.
Graying or fading in the sidewall area of the tire.

How to prevent tire dry rot. You can take some steps to slow down cracking due to dry rot. The more you avoid exposing your tires to harsh conditions, the longer they'll last. Here's a short list of things you can do to prevent dry rot:

Avoid exposure  Sun and UV rays may cause your tires to crack. Limit your tires' exposure to sun and heat when in storage.
Avoid harsh chemicals While it's important to keep your tires clean, petroleum-based chemicals or cleaning products will damage the rubber in your tires. Use only soap and water when cleaning.
Maintain proper inflation Underinflated tires create excessive stress on sidewalls, which leads to overheating and cracking.
Don't let your tires sit for too long Lack of use seriously contributes to dry rot. When you drive on your tires, they stay supple. If your vehicle is stored, consider wheel covers.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

Checking your tire pressure is simple.

Why do you need to check it. While having your tire at the correct inflation allows it to properly support the load and helps your car handle better. Did you know the right tire pressure also improves your fuel consumption and helps prevent tire failure?

Checking your tire pressure is simple. First make sure your tires are cool, it's best to check your tires at least three hours after you last over your vehicle. Next have the right tool, a tire gauge like the one shown in the video below. Next you have to identify the recommended pressure for your vehicle's tires. This is not on your tire, to find the right pressure you've got to check your car manual or sticker inside the door jamb.

Remove the cap from the valve and firmly press the tire gauge on the valve, then look at the gauge and take a reading if the reading is lower than your recommended level bring your car to the neareast Mastercraft Discount Auto and Tire and one of our ASE Certified Technicians will perfrom a FREE tire safety check.

If you have a high quality air pump at home, fill up the tire to the right level and don't forget to take check your gauge if your tire is over inflated. If it is over inflated, you can release the air by pushing on the metal stem in the center of the valve with the fingernail or the tip of a pen.
